Winning a Dead Heat: Black Elected Officials Mobilize, Mobilize and Mobilize

By most polls the North Carolina race for the United States Senate is a dead heat.  That being the case, victory in November will go to the political party that executes the best voter mobilization plan.  Since August 2013, I’ve been monitoring and writing about the NC political landscape. I’ve also evaluated the response of the Black community to the Voter Suppression Act of 2013 (VSA). On August 8, a federal judge rejected pre-election legal challenges to the VSA and thereby created a November showdown between the Republican Tom Tillis’ advocates for voter suppression and the Democrat Kay Hagan’s opponents of voter suppression. 

West Florissant, Mo. Explodes in Protest of Police Shooting, More Than 30 Arrests

ST. LOUIS — What started as a peaceful prayer vigil for Michael Brown, the unarmed teen who was killed by Ferguson police, ended in an explosion of looting and destruction in the North County area surrounding where the tragedy took place – and beyond. Hundreds gathered at 8 p.m. for a peaceful candlelight vigil in the young man’s honor. Before 9 p.m. police would summon surrounding municipalities as the crowd turned aggressive. The Target parking lot of the Buzz Westfall Shopping Center was filled with dozens and dozens of police vehicles and the area of West Florissant from Jennings to Ferguson was blocked off. Helicopters and tanks –as well as vehicles from a host of area departments – descended on West Florissant as looting and vandalism got underway.

SAN FRANCISCO — Risky situations increase anxiety for women but not for men, leading women to perform worse under these circumstances, finds a study to be presented at the 109th Annual Meeting of the American Sociological Association. “On the surface, risky situations may not appear to be particularly disadvantageous to women, but these findings suggest otherwise,” said study author Susan R. Fisk, a doctoral candidate in sociology at Stanford University, who defines a risky situation as any setting with an uncertain outcome in which there can be both positive or negative results, depending on some combination of skill and chance.

Key findings indicate that a particular team or organization can look quite different to people depending upon their backgrounds and racial identity.
