Angela Bassett’s New Skin Care Line

Actress Angela Bassett has partnered with Dr. Barbara Sturm, her friend and a well-known skincare expert, to launch a new skin care line that specifically addresses the needs of women with darker complexions. The new line is called Darker Skin Tones, and will be available in-store and online starting in July.

Bassett, who has reportedly struggled with skin issues herself, said she used Sturm’s original line to treat her breakouts and irritations, but it didn’t help her because her skin was darker. It also didn’t help women who suffered hyperpigmentation – a common condition in which patches of skin become darker due to an an excess of melanin.

So Bassett reached out to Dr. Sturm, and the two started working on a new formula. Bassett says that she wants to bring more awareness to skin care. She comments, “[I want people] to see what is good for it, and ingredients that are helpful — not invasive or irritating. I’d like them to be pleased when they look in the mirror, to feel good about themselves and the condition of their complexion.”

Darker Skin Tones will be a five-item line that will aim to reduce inflammation, even tones and minimize pores and hyperpigmentation. Purslane, the main ingredient in the products, works as an anti-aging agent and helps to even out the tone.

“It has such powerful properties in every direction. But what I like the most is actually the youth enzyme, this telomerase activator,” says Sturm. “The telomerase activates an enzyme to keep those ends of the chromosomes long, which actually works against natural programmed cell death, and that’s the key. So not only do we have anti-inflammation and the evening out of skin tone, but also a big thing for anti-aging.”

The product line includes a foam cleanser, enzyme cleanser, face cream, face cream rich and hyaluronic serum. •

The price will range from $58 to $335, and will launch exclusively at Harrods in-store and online in July. •
