Federal Unemployment Extension is Part of “What North Carolinians Need to Survive”

Raleigh, N.C. – Yesterday, North Carolina’s Capitol Broadcasting Company wrote an editorial condemning Senator Thom Tillis and Senator Richard Burr for the lack of attention to the coronavirus pandemic and associated economic devastation. The editorial said North Carolinians’ may want to issue a “silver alert” to find Tillis and Burr who have been “off the radar when it comes to addressing the coronavirus pandemic.”

The CBC called for an extension of $600 weekly federal unemployment payments as one measure to continue to provide relief to struggling North Carolina families.

“Senator Tillis and Senator Burr should come out of hiding and start working to protect North Carolinians from a massive pandemic pay cut next week,” said Piedmont Rising Executive Director Casey Wilkinson. “Extending $600 federal unemployment is a lifeline to ensure that struggling families can continue to afford housing, food, and prescription drugs. Tillis and Burr must take action to give North Carolinians the support they need to survive.”

More from the CBC Editorial:

  • “In just days, key unemployment benefits for more than 800,000 North Carolinians will end
  • “Federal unemployment payments have “injected $4.2 billion into the North Carolina economy – putting food on out-of-work family tables; paying rent and utility bills; childcare costs and medical care costs”
  • “If nothing is done, benefits for hundreds of thousands of unemployed in North Carolina will drop from a weekly average of $877 to $277”
  • “Richard Burr and Thom Tillis: Offer up a clear voice in support of what North Carolina needs to survive”
