GDN Moving Forward

Mission Statement:

Our mission is to promote, in North Carolina, diversity, community empowerment and tolerance in politics, business, health and education through our value driven media.

Sowing the Seeds of Greater Diversity

By Co-publisher, Peter Grear

Started in Fayetteville, NC in October of 1987, GDN’s original name was “The Challenger”. We started as a local minority focused weekly publication. We later relocated to Wilmington, NC and developed a statewide format. During our early years the focus of our coverage was geared toward business and politics. Later, Greater Diversity News became the official publication of many state and national black leadership organizations.

Through the years we have

been a member of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), the North Carolina Black Publishers Association (NCBPA), and the Carolinas Minority Suppliers Development Council (CMSDC). The Challenger became the leading source for statewide coverage of business opportunity and economic news of interest to the minority community. Today we remain the go to media for the advertisement of business opportunities seeking the participation of minority businesses. Public bodies and contractors across the state regularly chose our website and print publication to target minority business enterprises.

During the late 90’s we established our Internet presence, GreaterDiversity.com and have continued to evolve the quality of our site and the quality of our publication. Our online classifieds offer minority businesses, job seekers and other timely notice of opportunities for employment and business. Our evolution includes the continued enhancement of services to Minority Business Enterprises, Black Elected officials and a sharper focus on community empowerment. These efforts led to the creation of our signature program, The National Black Family Empowerment Agenda, (NBFEA), a faith-based networking initiative. One of the most important projects of The NBFEA was the efforts we put forth in renouncing and denouncing the use of the “N” word. This project is still one that we highly value and see the need for.

In October 1997, our business incorporated as The Promised Land Media, Inc. and started doing business as Greater Diversity News. During the intervening years, as we have grown we have continued to enhance the quality of our products and services. Our Internet site has added a business directory and free activity calendar. We also provide a free digital version of our weekly newspaper edition. We have expanded our diversity focus to include a social empowerment perspective for the disenfranchised/marginalized group in our society.

Today, Greater Diversity News is more than just another African-American owned and operated newspaper; it is a positive, educational tool that informs readers about cultural perspectives on politics, education, spiritual and social issues. We profile churches and ministers that exemplify community empowerment through their various ministries and programs.

Several months ago we established our Facebook fan page, www.facebook.com/greaterdiversitynews . The response to our Facebook presence has been very encouraging and has made our business more agile and interactive. Our online services allows our readership to operate in a more interactive environment in the delivery of our services as well as allowing our readers and supporters to contribute their ideas and comments to our efforts.

Our future depends upon our ability to convince our readership and supporters that our presence in the marketplace has strategic advantage to them and that they can promote and enhance that value by sharing their ideas and concerns with us – and by introducing us to their friends.
