ECSU Announces New Vice Chancellor

LaTanya Afolayan ECSUMrs. LaTanya Afolayan has been named Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement at Elizabeth City State University (ECSU). Previously, she served as the interim vice chancellor. The Division of Institutional Advancement is responsible for managing the planned promotion of understanding, participation, and support of ECSU. The Division is comprised of the following units: Alumni Relations, Community Development, ECSU Foundation, Radio and Television Services, and University Relations and Marketing. Mrs. Afolayan received a bachelor’s degree in political science from Indiana State University and a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia. She is currently a doctoral student in the School of Education at East Carolina University. She received her certification in Fundraising Management from the Center on Philanthropy at IUPUI, Indianapolis, IN. In 2005, she completed the exam for certification in estate planning from the National Institute of Estate Planning. Ms. Afolayan was designated to represent Elizabeth City State University during a one-year course in major and planned gifts facilitated by John Brown Limited, in conjunction with the Office of Advancement, UNC-General Administration.  Her career in development began in 1996 at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.  Her professional accomplishments follow:


•  Developed university’s planned giving publications; develop all planned giving proposals; Developed planned giving presentation series for alumni and community members; host 3-5 annual planned giving presentations;

•  Directed Chancellor’s solicitation activity for two building naming gifts with a cumulative value of $718,000 in 2007;

•  Developed, maintain and monitor moves management activity for fundraising. Qualify, assign and monitor cultivation prospect activity for the Chancellor, Vice Chancellor, and all development officers. Personally manage a portfolio of 100 major and planned giving prospects;

•  Currently managing $ 2.4 million in the pipeline which represents corporate and foundation solicitations and major gifts from alumni;

•  Current corporate and foundation relationship development includes State Farm Insurance, Coca Cola Foundation, Dominion Power, Cox Communications, Pepsi Bottling Ventures, Belk Foundation, NC AT&T, Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation;

•  Instrumental in increasing alumni participation rate since 2002; the most dramatic increase in alumni participation rate occurred in April 2008 from 350 donors to 1000+ by June 30, 2008.  Alumni participation goal for FY2009 is 2000 donors;

•  Serve as the liaison to the ECSU Foundation Board of Directors (since 2004). Responsible for the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of board members. Assist board members with the identification and cultivation of major gift prospects and prospective board members;

•  Developed the ECSU Board of Visitors, an advisory group chartered by the ECSU Board of Trustees. This group of 40 educators, medical professionals, business, and community leaders contributed $100,000 to the ECSU Foundation in 2008. This total represents the largest collective contribution among the university’s leadership groups;

•  Assumed management of three additional units (March 2007) – University Relations & Marketing, Radio and Television Services, and Community Development

•  Launched the Parents and Families Weekend Initiative as the precursor to the ECSU Parents Association. The Parents Association will support recruitment, fundraising and public relations at ECSU;

•  Led and executed ECSU’s 2003 Tom Joyner Foundation Campaign for ECSU which resulted in $250,000 in private gifts. The success of the ECSU campaign served as a training model for Tom Joyner Schools in 2004 and 2005: Responsible for planning the 2005 Tom Joyner Scholarship Brunch which resulted in $45,000 in scholarship support. •
