Stopping Violence and Developing Solidarity and Unity Within and Between the Communities
October 14, 2017 - October 15, 2017
I greet you in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus the Christ. The second meeting to make plans for a 2-day East Wilmington Community Day event was held on Tuesday, August 22, 2017. I am providing this communiqué to give an overview about the event and request your support and/or participation. It is our prayer that you will be a part to assure that it can be held in the East Wilmington community.
We would like to sponsor this collective event of fellowship, food, and fun for the East Wilmington community on Saturday and Sunday, October 14 and 15, 2017. We will continue to use a general theme of “stopping violence and developing solidarity and unity within and between the communities”.
As a note, OTMI sponsored a similar event in August 2016 for the Creekwood South Resident Association and the Creekwood North Homeowners Association. It was a great success due to the support and participation of our partner organizations. As a result of the initial meeting, I am now reaching out to our local churches, government officials, other organizations and individuals. I look forward to positive interactions in the future meeting(s) so that the East Wilmington Community Day event is successful.
The general plan is to utilize the field at 3009 Princess Place Drive (corner of 30th Street and Princess Place Drive) for all the activities that will take place. Through our planning, we will be seeking out government and municipal officials, any and every faith-based organizations, businesses and other organizations to assist with food, finances, fun activities, entertainment, transportation, and other needs. Several meetings are proposed to be held with representatives involved to assure that the event is successful.
The general format for carrying out the community fellowship will be:
Saturday, October 14, 2017; 12:30 PM until into the night;
This will be a collective and combined community “block party” of fellowship, food, and fun. We are inviting various organizations, churches, and departments to setup displays and large equipment. We have various entertainment and activities planned for both youth and adults. Have several speakers and sessions to talk about “stopping the violence in the community”. We are working to have an onsite movie night at the location. OTMI will set up an outside mobile stage and sound system. Free food will be provided to those in attendance. Individuals, churches, and organizations will provide entertainment and interactive games.
Sunday, October 15, 2017; 3:00 PM until dusk;
We are inviting various organizations, churches, and departments to setup displays and large equipment. Have various entertainment and activities for both youth and adults. Have several speakers and sessions to talk about “stopping the violence in the community”. OTMI set up an outside mobile stage and sound system around 1:30 PM. Program will consist of music, entertainment, speakers, and interactive games by the organizations, churches, choirs, and organizations involved. Light food will be provided.
First, the OTMI board of directors and I are requesting that you, your Church, and/or organization will support and participate in the two days of activities. Specifically, we are requesting:
- that you set up a vendor display or tent to introduce yourself and interact with all who will be in attendance;
- that you help us financially with tax-deductible donations of $150.00 and more (churches and other organizations) –or- $10 and more (individual) to help defray expenses for holding the event;
- that you allow your choir, dance or praise group to participate on Sunday, October 15, 2017.
Please let me know of anything that I or the board can do to assist and facilitate your decision-making process.
Our next planning meeting is scheduled for Thursday, September 14, 2017, at 5:30 PM. The location will be Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, 2929 Princess Place Drive, in Wilmington. Please feel free to attend if you desire. In the meantime, I am available to answer any of your concerns or questions by calling my cell phone at 910-352-5583.
