Saffo to Be Honored as Citizen of the Year

Written by Featured Organization on 15 May 2009.

Cape Fear Area Resource Centers will present its first annual “Citizen of the Year” award during its fundraising banquet to be held at 6:30 p.m., May 23rd at the Coastline Convention Center in downtown Wilmington. The CFARC board has selected Mayor Bill Saffo to be the 2009 honoree. The criteria used in making the selection included the traits of integrity, honesty with compassion, and respect. They also looked for quality work output and if the nominee is a positive representative of our area and has complied with all laws.
When making the announcement, the chair of the Cape Fear Area Resource Centers Board of Directors, Ben Griffin said, “Bill was selected as Citizen of the Year because he is a citizen who treats all people with compassion and respect and always represents Wilmington and the entire region in a very positive way.”

An advocate for the Centers and former executive director, Dale Smith said Saffo was and ideal match, “I have worked closely with Bill for the last 5 years and have found him to be someone who does what he says he will do, is honest, and brings people together for the benefit of the community.”

Organizers say that the night should be a fun evening and in addition to a short award ceremony. Attendees at the black tie affair will enjoy a speaker, a catered dinner, and music and dancing by Wilmington party band 360 Degrees.

Tickets for this premiere occasion are $100 per person and proceeds will benefit the Northside Community Center campus project.
Building the Northside Community Center is the next major step toward revitalizing the Northside neighborhood, a 40+ year old dream  of resident E.B. Davis. This one stop Center for service and training will strengthen lives, families, neighborhoods and city as a whole.

In January 07, the city of Wilmington turned over to the organization several buildings and tracts of land that formerly served as the city’s operations center. Plans are continuing with site work and landscaping currently in production.
The mission is to build and operate a neighborhood based, one-stop campus with facilities to provide programs and services and access to services needed by the underserved population in Wilmington’s inner city. For more information about the event or the Center, call the Center office at 910 762-8505. •
