LOS ANGELES (NNPA) - The first Black Californian elected to Congress,
the longtime L.A. legislator forged the path for an entire generation
of African-American politicians. Augustus Freeman Hawkins, who some called “the Gentle Giant,” died Nov.
10 at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Md., due to complications of old
age. He was 100.

Rep. Al Wynn (D-Md.), who is the chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce&amp;#39;s subcommittee on Environmental and Hazardous Materials, convened a hearing on Oct. 4 on the issue of environmental racism with officials from the EPA and civil rights groups.
