Lied-to Children More Likely to Cheat and Lie

The study tested 186 children ages 3 to 7

The study tested 186 children ages 3 to 7 in a temptation-resistance paradigm. Approximately half of the children were lied to by an experimenter, who said there was “a huge bowl of candy in the next room” but quickly confessed this was just a ruse to get the child to come play a game.

Unconscious Mind Can Detect a Liar When Conscious Mind Fails

The unconscious mind could catch a liar

“We set out to test whether the unconscious mind could catch a liar – even when the conscious mind failed,” says ten Brinke. Along with Berkeley-Haas Assistant Professor Dana R. Carney, lead author ten Brinke and Dayna Stimson (BS 2013, Psychology), hypothesized that these seemingly paradoxical findings may be accounted for by unconscious mental processes.

The Corporate Plot That Obama and Corporate Lobbyists Don't Want You to Know About

Written by Featured Organization on Monday, 04 November 2013 15:17.

John Travis HoltA US-led trade deal is currently being negotiated that could increase the price of prescription drugs, weaken financial regulations and even allow partner countries to challenge American laws. But few know its substance. The pact, the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), is deliberately shrouded in secrecy, a trade deal powerful people, including President Obama, don’t want you to know about. More than 130 members of Congress have asked the White House for greater transparency about the negotiations and were essentially told to go fly a kite. While most of us are in the dark about the contents of the deal, which Obama aims to seal by year end, corporate lobbyists are in the know about what it contains.

America's Greatest Shame: Child Poverty Rises and Food Stamps Cut While Billionaires Boom

Written by Featured Organization on Monday, 04 November 2013 15:14.

John Travis Holt

There are 16.4 million American children living in poverty. That's nearly one quarter (22.6%) of all of our children. More alarming is that the percentage of poor children has climbed by 4.5 percent [3] since the start of the Great Recession in 2007. And poor means poor. For a family of three with one child under 18, the poverty line is $18,400. Meanwhile, the stock market is booming. Banks, hedge funds and private equity firms are making tens of billions of dollars again [4], while the luxury housing and goods markets are skyrocketing.

Shopping While Black: Is Conspicuous Consumption Related to Black-White Wealth Gap?

Written by Les Leopold on Monday, 04 November 2013 15:04.

Trayon Christian was racially profiled while buying a $250 belt at Barneys. Kayla Phillips was accosted by police after buying a $2,500 handbag from the same store [3]. Their treatment is unacceptable. Racial profiling is wrong—it is also ineffective in preventing crime. Al Sharpton is correct in his efforts to defend the basic rights [4] of people to be treated equally and fairly while shopping, regardless of their skin color.

A 12-year-old Fights Against Voter Suppression Efforts in North Carolina

Written by Funke Oyelade on Monday, 04 November 2013 15:00.

A young girl who is not old enough to drive, vote or work is taking on what she sees as an unfair law to eliminate young kids from voting in North Carolina. 12-year old Madison Kimrey slammed North Carolina’s restricting voting laws that will not allow 16 and 17-year-olds to pre-register to vote, reported the Salon. When Kimrey requested to meet with North Carolina’s Gov. Pat McCrory, he declined, calling the girl “a prop for Liberal groups,” reported All Voices.
