RALEIGH– A N.C. Commission of Indian Affairs program that provides workforce development services to American Indian citizens, communities and businesses in four tribal communities in North Carolina has received a $274,534 grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to continue services throughout FY2011-12. “The American Indian Workforce Development Program helps American Indian citizens gain the skills necessary to join the workforce and contribute to their local economy,” said Commission Executive Director Greg Richardson.
“This program not only fosters individual self-sufficiency but also helps to strengthen our communities.” Through the Workforce Investment Act (WIA), the U.S. Department of Labor funds 178 Indian, Native American, Native Hawaiian, and Alaska Native programs. The Commission provides services to eligible North Carolina citizens via field offices and staff located within Indian communities. The Commission program is tailored to support individual client needs to overcome barriers to employment through classroom training, work experience, and job search and placement assistance services. Some clients may qualify for additional services, such as transportation or temporary housing assistance while in training. Program applicants who are enrolled members of state or federally recognized tribes, Alaska Natives and Native Hawaiians may be eligible for services through Commission. Highest preference is provided to qualified military veterans. Eligibility for the program is based on income and other factors.
