In 2007, he wrote Taking it Back: How to Become a Successful Black Beauty Supply Owner. He has been discussing how individuals can own beauty supply stores every time Baisden covers the disparaging issue. Five years later, he has penned another title that appeals to a broader audience titled, Power M.O.V.E.: How to Transition from Employee to Employer.
When asked by Michael Baisden what Devin finds to be entrepreneurs’ biggest challenge, he said, “Capital remains public enemy number one, with Cash Flow running closely behind. Entrepreneurship is a different culture that many truly understand so they become shocked when they learn of the different dynamics necessary in being a successful entrepreneur. It is contrary to that of an employee managing one’s own personal funds among other things.”
A former U.S. Army soldier and defunct WorldCom employee, he turned his turbulent time with the company into success after voluntarily leaving to become a full-time entrepreneur with a portfolio that include(d) beauty supply stores, publishing, real estate and consulting. He made two major professional transitions and explains how to best do so.
Devin, a business and economics professor, trains individuals on the pitfalls in entrepreneurship. He knows failure well and, according to him, has experienced the sweet taste of success. “Without deeply invasive teachings and preparations, entrepreneurs often fail”, he said. “A study by Kauffman Foundation reveals that the largest number of entrepreneurs is high school dropouts. This means that those who have the knowledge either not taking the chances or are ill-equipped for entrepreneurship despite their textbook knowledge.”
Baisden went on to ask, “What does the acronym M.O.V.E. stand for?” Devin explained, “The book is broken down into quarters of the year and each letter represents that. M stands for Mindset, O stands for Order, V stands for Vacate and E stands for Execute. You are not entitled to a job. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been working their or how much work for that company you’ve done. If you weren’t given or promised ownership, you are not entitled to anything but a paycheck.” The Michael Baisden syndicated radio show has 6,000,000 listeners, 500,000 Facebook fans and 75,000 Twitter followers.
