Wilmington, N.C. - While Rosenwald Schools left a legacy of reading, writing and arithmetic for African-American children, their impact can perhaps best be measured by the numbers: 4,977 schools, 217 homes for teachers, and 163 shop buildings constructed in 15 states, all used to educate more than 650,000 students. Add to that a lifetime of hard work and dedication from countless teachers and other supporters and you have a sense of how the Rosenwald initiative improved the education of African American schoolchildren in the Southeastern U.S.

The 2011 Elementary Science Olympiad tournament was held at Freeman School of Engineering on April 2, 2011. Among the nearly 250 elementary students who participated, more than 150 students were from New Hanover County Schools.

DURHAM — As part of North Carolina Central University’s commitment to creating and sustaining a culture of student success, a student symposium will take place tomorrow and Saturday in the Pearson Cafeteria Banquet Hall. The theme is “The Journey to Graduation and Beyond.”  Registration will begin at 3:30 p.m. on Friday (April 8) and the program is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. with a reception to follow. Registration starts at 8 a.m. on Saturday with the program scheduled for 9 a.m.

As part of my end of the semester ritual, I routinely invite 10-12  distinguished seniors out for dessert to celebrate their upcoming  graduation. These are students, majoring or minoring in women's studies,  which I have had the honor of teaching and mentoring over many years.  It's my small way of celebrating their accomplishments and introducing  talented students to one another.
