The North Carolina Black Repertory Company’s Teen Theatre Ensemble will perform the stage play “By a Black Hand\,” written by P rofessor Arthur Reese and Darryl Goodman\, directed by Mabel Robinson. Th is compelling production is intended for youth of all ages\, as it reve als rare and enlightening history facts (that you won’t find in the tex t books or everyday curriculum) about Black inventors\, whose creations w e use in everyday life. “By a Black Hand” revolves around a young wo man who is troubled about her lack of knowledge concerning the contributi ons of her African American ancestors. With the help of her grandfather and her favorite Hip-Hop trio\, she is able to finally learn the true wor th of her heritage. With their high energy\, mesmerizing lyrics\, and co ntemporary dance moves\, the Teen Theatre Ensemble will deliver an unforg ettable history lesson that is a “must see!”

On September 15th\, join us for a rockin' good time at the 3 rd Annual Super Cooper's Rockin' Run and Family Fun festival to benefit Su per Cooper's Little Red Wagon Foundation. This fun filled family friendl y event includes a Family Fun Run\, 5K and Festival with:
\nThe fun begins at 2:00PM with the Family Fun Run follo
wed by the 5K. The Family Fun Run is open to all ages and abilities to r
un\, walk\, skip\, dance\, bike\, scooter or any other method of finishing
the 1.56 mile course. After the Family Fun Run\, there will be a second s
tart approximately 30 minutes later for the 5K. The 5K is open to runner
s or walkers of all ages.
At 2:00 the entertainment and kid’s
activities will also kick off on the Southern Village Green. There will
be a giant slide\, mechanical bull and game truck not to mention live mus
ic\, a live auction and lots of entertainment for all ages. The band Ski
nny Bag of Sugar will perform. For a more detailed schedule\, please see
below.
This year your ticket includes all the fun of the Fun R
un/5K and Festival activities as well as a tshirt (available if tickets pu
rchased prior to August 28th). Food and drinks will be available for purch
ase from a range of vendors including some of the area’s best food truck
s. Each vendor is donating a portion of proceeds to the Super Cooper's
Little Red Wagon Foundation.

Funds raised from this event will be used to support the
Super Cooper's Little Red Wagon Foundation mission of providing housing an

hting this disease. The 2012 Foundation fundraising goal is $75\,000 to he
lp reach our 2018 goal of $750\,000.

Dr. May Edward Chinn\,` is a play based upon the life of a social revolutionary\, who was the first African American woman to graduate from Bellevue Hospital Medical College and th e first African American woman to intern at Harlem Hospital. In her priva te practice\, she provided care for patients who would not otherwise rece ive treatment due to racism or classism. Written by Laurence Holder and directed by Imani\, this is a jewel of a show that celebrates both the g reat achievement of Dr. Chinn’s life (she was an early specialist in th e detection and treatment of women’s cancers) and the power of possibil ity. “Big Mama Speaks: A 1921 Tulsa Race Riot Survivor’s Story\,” is based on Hannibal B. Johnson’s book\, Black Wall Street: From Riot to Renaissance in Tulsa’s Historic Greenwood District. A one-act vignette\ , the play traces the history of Tulsa\, Oklahoma’s African American co mmunity\, the “Greenwood District\,” renowned nationally in the early twentieth century for its preeminent Black entrepreneurs. Vanessa Adams- Harris portrays Big Mama\, who decides to share her real life story\, inc luding what she witnessed as a child in Tulsa\, Oklahoma in 1921.

iza: Rwanda Shares Sept. 20 through Oct. 25. The exhibition formally opens
with a reception at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday\, Sept. 20 in the gallery locat
ed on the 2nd floor of the
Fisher University Union.
Through his choices of mixed media\, Nkurunziza uses vibrant colors and an
abstract impressionist style to explore 'Mother Rwanda\,'?the country as
both place and parent. His experience with blending colors and shading cre
ates a sense of movement while capturing symbolic moments from what he obs
erves on his journey as an artist. He states\, 'The dynamic rhythm of natu
re\, people\, colors and texture within my world are the basis from which
my art is derived.'
Nkurunziza actively spreads his love of art
and his vision of the national identity to others in his work with projec
ts like Ivuka Arts where budding artists can find mentors and impoverished
children can find\, as the collective's website says\, 'hope and educatio
nal opportunities.' With pieces titled 'Fellowship' and 'Equality\,' the w
orks of Innocent Nkurunziza embody ideas rather than just images\, ideas t
hat UNC Wilmington is carrying into the classroom with several class visit

down the different elements of a story and learn how each element can play

Attendees will also explore multiple forms
of media and learn how to take one concept and expand it across different
mediums. Participants receive paper and digital handouts outlining the dif
ferent elements of a story as well as examples of how one story can be tol
d across multiple platforms. Further\, participants will also receive work
sheets for strategic brainstorming along with the case study exploration.<

The workshop proceeds in three sections in which facilitators:

The Cucalorus Film Festival was
founded in 1994. At the inaugural event\, crowds wrapped around the bloc
k to see 16 local films screening at a restaurant by the Cape Fear River.
These days Cucalorus Film Festival takes place every November in historic

Calling all Triangle Youth Step teams!
On March 1
6th\, the members of the Sigma Rho Zeta chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority\
, Inc. (Cary\, NC) will host the 8th Triangle Youth Step-Off. This youth s
howcase is inspired by the traditional African-American Greek step shows.
The showcase is designed to encourage creativity\, education\, and healthy
competition. Teams from area schools\, churches and community organizatio
ns will compete at Sanderson HS Auditorium in Raleigh\, NC. The doors open
at 1:30 pm\, the event begins at 2pm. This year\, up to 8 teams will repr
esent Raleigh\, Durham\, Cary and surrounding areas. The cost for entry is
$8 in advance\, $10 at the door. Group sale discounts are available. The
proceeds of the event will support the chapter’s Annual High School scho
larship to be awarded to a graduating Cary resident.
The first Ste
p-Off\, held in 2004 drew a crowd of over 500 attendees. Over the years th
e event has grown\, awarding local teams the honor of Step-Off Champions.
This year’s winning team will join the roster of the area’s most talen
ted step teams. Previous winners include Dillard Middle School\, Fuquay’
s Finest\, Little Betas\, Blue Dynasty Community Center\, and Victorious P
raise Step team. The first\, second and third place teams will win a cash
prize and trophy.
“When I initially came up with the idea for
the chapter to host the event\, the premise was to provide local youth te
ams with a public outlet to display their amazing talents. The goal was to
be inclusive of school\, church\, recreational and community center teams
. The event has grown with each passing year and it is indeed a pleasure t
o witness the creativity and originality of all the teams that participate
” Angela Brown\, the event’s founding chairwoman. The chapter consists
of twenty-six women that share interests in scholarship\, service\, siste
rly love\, and finer womanhood. This program brings the national ZHOPE pro
gram locally where members help others through programming which support e
ducational\, health and wellness initiatives. This year’s Step-Off is ex
pected to sell out the 800 seat capacity of Sanderson High School’s audi

s Guild (NCGAG) that is slated for May at the Imperial Sheraton Hotel in D
urham\, North Carolina. The Convention is on tap to be the biggest ever he
ld by the Guild and top industry experts from around the nation will fully
engage\, educate\, empower and motivate participants. This annual event i
s one of the flagship events of the gospel industry that is solely committ
ed to broadening the educational welfare and professional expansion of its
membership.
A 501c3 organization\, the NCGAG is one of the la
rgest in the nation. During the Convention informative seminars will be le
d by dynamic and empowering speakers who outline current industry trends\,
standards\, marketing strategies and protocol for radio announcers\, prom
oters\, station owners\, record labels\, media and gospel artists. Attende
es will also be given specific guidance for the deliberate distribution of

The Bellamy Mansion Museum’s Race for History\, a 5K run a nd mile walk around historic downtown on Sunday\, July 22\, will end at Wi lmington's historic masterpiece. Refreshments will be served in the courty ard\, and participants will have a chance to tour the mansion after finish ing the race. The goal of the race is to help raise operational funds for the Mansion and re-introduce this historic site to a crowd of people who m ay not have visited in while (or may have never visited!).

ll love\, laughter\, song and the gathering of family. Freelon's parents p
assed away within a year of one another\, leaving her to carry on their be
liefs regarding the true gift of Christmas - the joy of spending loving mo
ments together. This gift has resulted in the creation of a holiday album
that extends the love of Christmas with each and every song. Come experi

An acclaimed jazz vocalist and six-time Grammy nominee\, Freelon approach
ed friend and fellow North Carolinian John Brown\, a long-time member of h
er musical family\, director of Duke University's jazz program and leader
of John Brown's Big Band to record the album. The two\, who have shared th
e stage and collaborated often during their twenty-year friendship\, joine
d together to create Christmas\, a selection of holiday songs. Brown produ
ced the album and will release it on his label\, Brown Boulevard. For Free
lon\, Christmas has always been a time of church and family\, 'The secular
and the sacred were all a part of the celebration. And I love that it's t
he one holiday where singing is in the forefront.'
Freelon has
built a career on looking at standards from a non-traditional point of vie
w. And since no body of material has been covered more than holiday music\
, the songs stretched Freelon and Brown's abilities to explore new arrange
ments and present new takes on these seasonal classics.
The album kicks off with 'Swingle Jingle Bells\,' a new way to dash throu
gh the snow even more quickly thanks to a brisk arrangement by legendary s
axophonist Frank Foster. The album transitions into 'Spiritual Medley'\, w
hich includes 'Children Go Where I Send Thee\,' 'Go Tell It On The Mountai
n\,' 'O Little Town Of Bethlehem\,' 'Joy To The World' and 'Angels We Have

'Let It Snow' follows and then Freelon and Br
own contribute their take on Vince Guaraldi's 'Christmas Time Is Here' in
a nod to a more recent childhood holiday classic. Memories of early Christ
mas mornings helped Freelon transform Duke Ellington's 'I Love The Sunrise
' into a beautiful tribute to the dawn of Christmas day. According to Free
lon\, an added level of excitement and anticipation has always been a part
of the Christmas celebration and the next two tracks ('O Little Town of B
ethlehem' and 'Little Drummer Boy') reflect that sentiment.

for the third consecutive year)\, the 2011 MOJA Arts Festival promises an
exciting line-up of events with a rich variety of traditional favorites. N
early half of MOJA's events are admission-free and the remainder are offer
ed at very modest ticket prices\, ranging from $5 - $20.

OJA Arts Festival is a multi-disciplinary festival produced and directed b
y the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs in partnership with th
e MOJA Planning Committee\, a community arts and cultural group and the MO
JA Advisory Board\, a group of civic leaders who assist with fund raising
and advocacy. MOJA\, a Swahili word meaning 'One\,' is the appropriate nam
e for this festival celebration of harmony amongst all people in our commu
nity. The Festival highlights the many African-American and Caribbean cont
ributions to western and world cultures. MOJA's wide range of events inclu
de visual arts\, classical music\, dance\, gospel concert\, jazz concert\,
poetry\, R&B concert\, storytelling\, theatre\, children's activities\, t
raditional crafts\, ethnic food\, and much\, much more.

ition to its myriad arts presentations\, MOJA also includes an active and

\nIsabelle Demers at the organ is a force of nature-a diminutiv e dynamo to whom La Presse in Montreal attributed “vehement virtuosity. A native of Québec\, she is rapidly becoming recognized as one of Nort h America’s most virtuosic younger generation of organists. She began pi ano studies at age six and was admitted to the Montréal Conservatory of M usic at age eleven for both piano and organ. After graduation in 2003\, sh e studied on scholarship for a year in Paris at the École Normale de Pari s-Alfred Cortot. She received Master’s and Doctoral degrees from The Jui lliard School in New York\, where she studied with Paul Jacobs. She has be en a prize winner and finalist in several international performance compet itions in the United States\, Canada\, and Europe\, and performs widely th roughout the United States and Canada.

Safari Hunt
\nThe Safari Hunt is like an underwater ea
ster egg hunt on a shipwreck. At 9:00am\, we blow a horn at the Liberty
Ship off Wrightsville Beach\, NC. Divers hit the water to search for num
bered tokens that are hidden on the 400' wreck. Each diver is allowed a
maximum of 3 tokens.
On average we have 80-100 people signup for thi
s exciting event. After the dive\, everyone heads back to the Bridge Ten
der Marina. Everyone who participates gets a Safari Hunt T-shirt. Th
en\, we begin to call out numbers. When the number is called that matche
s one of your tokens\, you come up and draw a prize from the hat. At the
end of calling out all the token numbers\, people who didn't get a token
put their names in a hat to draw the remaining prizes. Around 120 tokens w
ill be hidden and over $4000.00 in prizes will be given away\, usually inc
luding a Regulator\, BC\, Dive Computer\, Riffe and AB Biller Spear guns\,
and tons more (prizes are dependent on what our generous vendors give us)
. Entry is $20.00 up to 6PM May 1st and $25.00 if paid between May 2nd a

The Roanoke River Ramble showcases one o f the most beautiful upriver sections of the Roanoke River during the ful l color of autumn. You will see (but not paddle in) rapids\, as you launc h your boat to enjoy a nine-mile smooth water paddle with good flow from the Rockfish Capital of the World – Weldon\, NC\, to the Birthplace of Independence – Halifax\, NC. During that nine-mile stretch\, it will be common to see Bald Eagles\, Osprey\, a variety of hawks\, Great Blue Her on\, Kingfishers and more. There will be a light breakfast and hot coffee to start\, and a delicious lunch and bluegrass music to finish. Long-sl eeved event T-shirts will be given.

\n< p class='MsoNormal'>The Philidor Percussion Group\, named after 17th-century kettledrummers Jacque and André Philido r\, is comprised of North Carolina musicians John R. Beck\, Rob Falvo\, Wi ley Sykes and Peter Zlotnick. Active since 1991\, this talented ensemble i s known for its combination of exciting music\, virtuosic musicians\, and theatrical sensibilities. Philidor has performed recitals and educational programs throughout much of the Southeast. \nJack Mitchener has been hailed for his brilliant and sensitive playing (The Diapason) and described as an artist who “brings music to life with supple rhythmic control\, clear phrasing\, energy\, and sensitiv ity” (The American Organist). A member of the Oberlin Conservatory facul ty\, he performed last season throughout the country including a recital f or the American Guild of Organists Region V Convention. He also played rec itals at the Church of St. Sulpice and the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Pari s. A laureate of national and international competitions (MTNA\; Philadelp hia AGO\; Dublin)\, he recently served as a judge for the Biarritz Interna tional Organ Competition in France.
