NC Comedy Arts Festival (1:00 PM)

The NC Comedy Arts Festival was created in 2001 to showcase Chicago-style improvisation to Southern improvisers and Carolina audiences. The NC Comedy Arts Festival — formerly Dirty South Improv Festival — invited four improv acts to perform and take workshops on the campus of the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill, NC) Sept. 1-3, 2012. This small invitational quickly became one of the most talked about events on the improv festival circuit and the largest festival of its kind in the country.

Career Opportunity Day At Camp Lejeune (8:00 AM - 2:00 PM)

The USO, in partnership with Hire Heroes USA, hosts transition workshops for wounded, ill and injured service members, their spouses, and caregivers. The workshops focus on resume writing, mock interviews, professional work practices and translating prior military experience into a civilian career. As a follow up to the workshops the USO, in partnership with Hire Heroes USA and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, host Career Opportunity Days for wounded, ill and injured troops, spouses and caregivers. These non-traditional career fair type events match employers with participants in advance based on interest and background. Employers are asked to provide position descriptions of available jobs along with geographic location of each to aid in better matching of candidates to employers. Employers conduct mock interviews and provide interviewing skills and feedback. Career Opportunity Days are limited to 10-15 employers and 50-75 wounded, ill and injured transitioning troops and veterans, as well as their spouses and caregivers to ensure the size and magnitude of these events provides an environment conducive to one-on-one interaction and networking. In 2011, six Career Opportunity Days were held with nearly 300 attendees. This year, the USO will host 22 workshops and 14 Career Opportunity Days.

WHO

No more than 15 employers with active employment opportunities and up to 40-70 wounded, ill, or injured, service members making the transition to a civilian career, as well as their spouses, and caregivers. To attend participants must have previously completed either a Hire Heroes USA transition workshop or another employment preparation program. All attendees will be prepared with resumes.

WHAT

Career Opportunity Days are high-touch, non-traditional career fairs. Employers are provided resumes in advance for those that have pre-registered, and they are connected for one-on-one “mock” interviews with service members, spouses and caregivers based on their backgrounds as well as the geographic locations each service member plans to live after medical retirement.

This interaction also gives the employer a unique opportunity to get to know the prospective candidates. We match attendees with employers based on their military specialty, previous experience, and geographic interest for relocation. Employers are given interviewees resumes in advance, except for in cases when troops do not pre-register.

WHEN

Wednesday, September 12, 2012

WHERE

USO of North Carolina Jacksonville Center | 9 Tallman Street, Jacksonville, NC 28540

WHY

This format provides the employer and the service member an opportunity to interact one-on-one, allow for hiring managers to provide constructive feedback and discuss potential opportunities — which is why we keep Career Opportunity Day intimate.

WHAT TO BRING: Each employer should have at least 2 employees attend, one to staff the table and the second to conduct mock interviews. Please bring a basic table top company display along with any literature.

Hundreds of Home Care Providers to meet in Orlando at NPDA Annual Leadership Conference

The non-profit National Private Duty Association (NPDA) will host its Annual Leadership Conference in Orlando, Sept. 12-14, 2012. The theme for the event, held at the Hilton in the Walt Disney Resort, is Transitions in Care – The Time is Now. This year’s event will mark the organization’s 10th Anniversary.

The conference, open to all private duty home care companies, will include education programs led by private duty industry experts, peer networking and discussion opportunities, and an industry trade show. Attendees will participate in sessions on topics such as successfully running a competitive private duty business, addressing key clinical issues, taking advantage of advances in technology, hiring and keeping the best employees, increasing profits through quality care and today’s legal and regulatory issues.

Keynote presenters include Dr. Kent Bottles, who will address how private duty home care fits into the transformation of the American clinical delivery system, human resources expert Mel Kleiman who will share his proven process on how to build world-class teams by recruiting, hiring and retaining the best employees, and industry attorney John C. Gilliland, II will provide a legal update.

“There are many changes and advances in our competitive industry,” said Sheila McMackin, president of NPDA. “NPDA’s intent is to provide a key opportunity for home care agency professionals to learn the latest trends from industry leaders and the best business practices from thought leaders outside our industry. We look forward to sharing with those in the private duty home care business at this major event.”

In addition to the main conference, a pre-conference workshop titled The Essential Tools for Transitions in Care: Operations, Marketing and Technology will take place Sept. 11-12, 2012. Featured speakers for this intensive event will be Elaine Davis, CareMinders; Melanie Stover, Home Care Sales by Powershot Training; Laurie Orlov, Aging in Place Technology Watch; Doug Bush, Care Innovations; and Lisa Ferden, Generations Homecare Systems.

“Our advanced pre-conference event takes the Transitions in Care conference theme to the next level,” said McMackin. “The in-depth sessions will be led by experts in three critical areas of the hospital-to-home transitional care model.”

Visit http://www.privatedutyhomecare.org/2012conference/ for details on the conference and to register.

The NPDA is the first and only association in the country dedicated exclusively to private pay home care providers. The NPDA, a non-profit organization, currently represents more than 1,200 home care agencies in forty-four states and Puerto Rico.

Business Essentials For Technical Professionals (All Day)

The Business Essentials for Technical Professionals course will be delivered by NC State University Poole Collee's Executive Programs in fall 2012. Delivery dates are Sept. 13, 14 and Oct. 25, 26, 2012.

This four-day course is designed for engineers, scientists, and others from applied technical fields who want to gain a deeper understanding of business.

“A key goal of the program is to enable participants to become ‘Boundary-Spanners’ – technical leaders who have the general management awareness to work effectively across functional areas within their organization,” said Dan McGurrin, Poole College’s Executive Programs director.

“Today’s successful organizations need technical professionals who understand how their work intersects with marketing, finance, operations, strategy, and services,” McGurrin said. “This course will help participants understand the different functions, how they sometimes conflict with one another, and how management systems can streamline these activities.”

In keeping with Poole College’s focus on applied learning, Business Essentials participants also will work in small teams to complete a business planning project – either for a new product offering at their company or in support of a peer’s project.

“This experience not only develops teamwork skills, but also enables the students to develop and plan the business aspects of a new offering, including the marketing plan and strategy, while utilizing concepts taught in the course,” McGurrin said.

Leadership Conference 2012 (All Day)

Wednesday, September 14, 2012 through Thursday, September 15, 2012
Register By Friday, August 20

For these two days the leadership of the Holly Springs Chamber of Commerce and the Business Community will gather to brainstorm and share ideas on significant topics such as economic development, technology, education, the business community's role in future growth and more.

We hope you take advantage of this opportunity to be part of the discussion on topics such as an alliance for quality growth, education from inside the classroom, the business community role in education, technology changing the way we live, work and play, and the changing work place environment.  The greatest benefit I always receive from attending a conference is the view of the trees in my own forest.  I simply can not see as much of the forest from the inside as I can from the outside.  I hope you can attend and enjoy the lively conversation with local and state business leaders who help shape our state, the region, Wake County, and Holly Springs.

Sponsorship opportunites are available for this event!

Mindful Lifestyle Discussion Series (6:30 PM)

We will be in the meeting room to the right as you come in the front door

Come and join the discussion as we explore the basics of mindfulness and the attitudes helpful to developing a practice outlined in Jon Kabat-Zinn's "Full Catastrophe Living."

Each session we will focus on one attitude and what it means to us, both in our meditation practice and in our daily lives.

Our first session will be on the attitude of "Non-judging" or taking the stance of an impartial witness to your inner and outer experience, being able to notice and step back from the constant stream of liking and disliking thoughts we have cluttering our minds much of the time and finding the peace which comes from seeing things as they really are.

That's just my short definition. We will read together Kabat-Zinn's segment from the book, I'll share a few stories and then we can open the discussion. What do you think of non-judging? How do you use it in your life or where do you want more of this attitude? What does our culture say about judging?

Looking forward to a fun and lively discussion.

Legendary Soul Singer Al Green In Concert (8:00 AM - 9:00 AM)

Legendary Soul Singer AL GREEN

American gospel and soul singer Al Green is coming to DPAC, Durham Performing Arts Center on September 19, 2012.
Tickets go on sale to the public beginning June 29 at 10am:

Online at DPACnc.com
DPAC Ticket Center: 919.680.2787, 123 Vivian Street, Durham, NC

Friends of DPAC members may place their orders on June 27.  Joining the Friends of DPAC is free, and you can register at www.DPACnc.com/friendofdpac.

"Our stage has hosted musical legends since we opened, and we’re keeping our track record strong with an appearance by Al Green. DPAC audiences will be treated to excellent sight lines and and perfect acoustics for this R&B superstar, and the memories he’ll evoke will last a lifetime," said Bob Klaus, GM for DPAC.

The Reverend Al Green is known the world over for his extraordinary voice and legendary hits that include “Let’s Stay Together”, “I’m Still in Love with You”,”Tired of Being Alone”, and "Take Me To The River".  In 2005, Rolling Stone magazine named him #65 on their “100 Greatests Artists of All Time”.  Green has sold more than 20 million records, has earned 11 GRAMMY Awards, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995.

Green’s latest release Lay It Down was conceived as a collaboration between the soul legend and a handful of gifted young admirers from the worlds of contemporary R&B and hip hop. The album is drawn from a series of inspired sessions that yielded the most high-spirited, funky and often lushly romantic songs of Green’s latter-day career. The album is a refreshingly old school jam, with everyone laying down the music together, face to face, heart to heart, soul to soul.

The project features the sophisticated R&B voices of singer-songwriters John Legend, Anthony Hamilton and Corinne Bailey Rae, and was co-produced with Green by two of hip-hop’s most innovative players, drummer Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson from the Roots and keyboardist James Poyser, the go-to guy for high-profile artists ranging from Erykah Badu to Common. Add in Brooklyn’s celebrated Dap-King Horns (Sharon Jones, Amy Winehouse), guitarist Chalmers “Spanky” Alford (Mighty Clouds of Joy, Joss Stone) and bassist Adam Blackstone (Jill Scott, DJ Jazzy Jeff), among others, and you’ve got a modern soul-music dream team, fronted by the most expressive voice in the business.

UNCW Boseman Gallery Presents Rwanda Shares - An Exhibition By Innocent Nkurunziza (5:30 PM)

The UNCW Ann Flack Boseman Gallery presents Innocent Nkurunziza: Rwanda Shares Sept. 20 through Oct. 25. The exhibition formally opens with a reception at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 20 in the gallery located on the 2nd floor of the

Fisher University Union.

Through his choices of mixed media, Nkurunziza uses vibrant colors and an abstract impressionist style to explore "Mother Rwanda,"?the country as both place and parent. His experience with blending colors and shading creates a sense of movement while capturing symbolic moments from what he observes on his journey as an artist. He states, "The dynamic rhythm of nature, people, colors and texture within my world are the basis from which my art is derived."

Nkurunziza actively spreads his love of art and his vision of the national identity to others in his work with projects like Ivuka Arts where budding artists can find mentors and impoverished children can find, as the collective's website says, "hope and educational opportunities." With pieces titled "Fellowship" and "Equality," the works of Innocent Nkurunziza embody ideas rather than just images, ideas that UNC Wilmington is carrying into the classroom with several class visits by the artist. The communal nature of his art expands as it is placed in tandem with the work of local student artists.

For more information, please contact the Association for Campus Entertainment (ACE) at 910.962.7722 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . WOW Southern Conference (10:00 AM)

WOW Southern Conference
"Set me as a seal upon your heart" Song of Songs 8:6

Come to the beautiful mountains of western North Carolina for a weekend Christian womens conference. The lovely “get away from it all” setting is refreshing and relaxing, giving you the opportunity to have quality fellowship with the Lord and others.

A WOW conference includes:

Fellowship, praise and worship,
Teaching from the Bible,
Laughter and tears...

Beginning on Friday evening after a relaxing dinner, and ending with lunch on Sunday gives ladies a chance to unwind and not be concerned with the details of every day life. The beautiful grounds of the Ridgecrest Conference Center foster private reflection, prayer and bible study.

Fellowship time with other women is available over meals and in between the WOW conference sessions. The impactful teaching of God’s Word by seasoned and anointed speakers is relevant and addresses the multi-functional roles of women in today’s society.

Prayer ministry is offered after the Word is taught to help women personally apply what they have learned.

Powerful times of worship through music invite the Lord’s presence. The arts, such as prophetic painting liturgical dance, and biblical theatre presentations are also incorporated into a WOW conference to express worship to the Lord.

If you are hungering for more, this Christian womens conference is for you!

You will be challenged to live your life for Jesus in ever deepening ways and come to know more of His joy and strength. The Bible teaches us that we are “complete in Christ” (Colossians2:10). This is an important concept for women to grasp as society teaches us that we will find completeness in our earthly relationships, careers, home-life, church or ministry.

For too long, women have searched for love in all the wrong places. Only in Christ can we truly be complete. Then we are enabled to face life with confidence no matter the circumstances we may find ourselves in because we know that God is with us. God is always faithful and taking part in a WOW event will reinforce that truth.

It is always enriching to be part of a Women of the Word conference in Ridgecrest, NC. WOW events have a rich and long history at Ridgecrest. The present and future promises to be even brighter as women are empowered to walk before the Lord prophetically and pursue their purposes in God’s Kingdom.

A beautiful Christian woman impacts her home, church, community and workplace with the light of Jesus.

A Women of the Word conference offers a place of learning, encouragement, healing and growth for women of all ages, cultures, and denominations. Dedicated to transforming women into Christ’s image through the teaching of His Word and the empowerment of His Spirit, WOW events equip women to walk out biblical truths in their daily lives.

We encourage you to please contact us with your thoughts and questions!

2012 Triangle Corporate Battle Of The Bands (7:30 PM)

Join us for an evening of classical splendor and gut-busting orchestration as this year’s bands come together to pump up the jams in honor of KidZNotes. This Durham nonprofit seeks to encourage positive decision-making by providing kids with free instruments and lessons as well as the chance to become part of a state-wide children’s symphony. Now that’s pretty hardcore. Visit www.trianglebattle.com for more information. To those about to rock our knee-socks off, we salute you.

This year’s epic Battle is dedicated to the original rock stars. The ones who made long hair, tight pants and cranking it to fortissimo cool long before electricity was even invented.

That’s right. This year, the Battle is getting a touch of classical, as we rock out in support of the radical rapscallions at KidZNotes!

So dust off your tux, practice your scales and get ready to Rachmaninoff. For more information about event details, sponsorship, and band entry check out the Triangle Battle website.
