As a Christmas gift to our community and surrounding area, Wake Forest Presbyterian Church, through the dedication of many, has for 11 years, delivered the true Christmas story in a stirring virtual “walk” through Bethlehem to the stable where the Christ Child was born. Please join us this 12th year as, under the night sky, the campus of Wake Forest Presbyterian Church is transformed into the most breathtaking outdoor, living nativity program that you can imagine.  With a cast and crew of more than 150, we will bring the story of the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, to life before your very eyes. As you journey through the streets of Bethlehem you will be engulfed in such emotion as this most beautiful and amazing story unfolds. Authentic costumes and settings will immerse you into believing you are actually witnessing that most holy miracle. Elise Testone tickets now available to the public

Tickets are now available to the general public for the upcoming Elise Testone concert on Wednesday, Dec. 5, at 7:30 p.m. at Coastal Carolina University's Wheelwright Auditorium. Testone, a CCU alumna, wowed "American Idol" viewers for most of Season 11 and placed sixth in the top 10.

Tickets for "Elise Testone Unplugged W/ Special Guests" are $5 for students and $10 for faculty, staff, and alumni, and $15 to the general public. Seats will be reserved.

Testone, a 2005 graduate, will perform her own brand of pop, soul, jazz and rock with a small acoustic backup band. She will meet and greet with fans and friends in the Wheelwright lobby after the show for photos and autographs.

The New Jersey native was just voted Singer of the Year for the Charleston City Paper Awards. She earned a degree in music at CCU, where she frequently performed with the late English professor Paul Rice and vocal professor David Bankston, as well as in the POP 101 group and various bands around town.

Testone has been living in Charleston since 2006, working as a voice teacher and performing at various venues around town with her backup band, The Freeloaders.

The 21st Annual Women’s Retreat will commence on Thursday, December 6 through Saturday, December 8, 2012.  Our theme is “In Pursuit of My Destiny” and the scripture reference is Hebrews 12:1. The retreat will be held at the Holiday Inn Virginia Beach-Norfolk & Conference Center located in Virginia Beach, VA.

Meet Rachael:
Rachael began teaching yoga in 2008 to Soldiers and decided to become a certified teacher shortly after. Her first training was with Pamela Schulte, Just Practice Yoga in St. Louis, Missouri. Rachael was very fortunate to find Just Practice Yoga with such an amazing teacher and without much knowledge of the area. Pamela’s training came from a strong Ashtanga background from her mentor and teacher, Birch Beryl Bender. Rachael moved to North Carolina where she found Lisa Clark, Embody Yoga. Again, she found another amazing teacher in the methods of Body-Mind-Centering, Integral and restorative yoga. Since then, Rachael has done various trainings to expand her knowledge and diversify in the yoga field. Most recently, she has completed advanced teacher training with Ana Forrest in Forrest Yoga and training with Manju P. Jois in Ashtanga Yoga. Being a member of the military community, she also completed her Yoga Warriors training in April 2009 and gives classes regularly at Fort Bragg, NC. Rachael is currently attending her 500 hour training with Rolf Gates in vinyasa yoga.

The Isley Brothers have basked in the forefront of popular music for nearly 50 years. Their career is incredible: dozens of #1 hits, both singles and albums; more than two dozen gold, platinum and multiplatinum singles and albums; countless awards and the Brothers' induction into The Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 1992.  What’s even more remarkable – and further indication of the Isleys’ lasting cultural significance – is how they’ve reinvented themselves with each passing year, thus consistently reaping a fresh crop of fans.  They are a bridge between today’s most vital pop artists and the soul greats who brought the music out of the church and into mass consciousness.

The Isley Brothers began singing together as youngsters in 1950.  Ronald, Rudolph, Kelly [originally O’Kelly] and Vernon started out as a gospel group, performing in churches and other venues throughout their hometown of Cincinnati.  But in 1955, Vernon Isley was killed in a bicycle accident.  The traumatized siblings would not reform the ensemble until 1956, the year they moved to New York.  Still, Ronald Isley says they did not consider themselves a professional unit until 1959, when the trio logged their first hit, “Shout.”  Ernie Isley joined the family business in 1969, which opened the door to his now-famous bass work on “It’s Your Thing.”

After The Isley Brothers left their initial mark on R&B charts in 1959 with “Shout” – which would sell a million copies and become a standard – they scored the #1 R&B hit “Twist And Shout” (both songs were subsequently covered by The Beatles), in 1962.  But it was 1969’s “It’s Your Thing” that cemented their fame, shooting to #1 on the Billboard R&B chart and ultimately selling more than five million copies.  The song also earned a Grammy®  Award for Best R&B Vocal Performance.

The Isley Brothers’ significance cannot be expressed by chart statistics alone.  In addition to their many other contributions to American popular music, the Brothers brought a virtually unknown guitarist by the name of Jimi Hendrix on their maiden tour of England, in 1964 (Hendrix made his first recordings with the Isleys and many have noted the influence of Ernie Isley on his playing).  On the European leg of that outing, their keyboardist was a young man named Elton John.

Nnenna Freelon's memories of Christmases past are reflected in every holiday celebration - the story, the anticipation, but most of all love, laughter, song and the gathering of family. Freelon's parents passed away within a year of one another, leaving her to carry on their beliefs regarding the true gift of Christmas - the joy of spending loving moments together. This gift has resulted in the creation of a holiday album that extends the love of Christmas with each and every song.  Come experience this special time of year on December 21 at the Carolina Theatre in Durham- when Ms. Freelon and Mr. Brown bring their Christmas album to life.

An acclaimed jazz vocalist and six-time Grammy nominee, Freelon approached friend and fellow North Carolinian John Brown, a long-time member of her musical family, director of Duke University's jazz program and leader of John Brown's Big Band to record the album. The two, who have shared the stage and collaborated often during their twenty-year friendship, joined together to create Christmas, a selection of holiday songs. Brown produced the album and will release it on his label, Brown Boulevard. For Freelon, Christmas has always been a time of church and family, "The secular and the sacred were all a part of the celebration. And I love that it's the one holiday where singing is in the forefront."

Freelon has built a career on looking at standards from a non-traditional point of view. And since no body of material has been covered more than holiday music, the songs stretched Freelon and Brown's abilities to explore new arrangements and present new takes on these seasonal classics.   

The album kicks off with "Swingle Jingle Bells," a new way to dash through the snow even more quickly thanks to a brisk arrangement by legendary saxophonist Frank Foster. The album transitions into "Spiritual Medley", which includes "Children Go Where I Send Thee," "Go Tell It On The Mountain," "O Little Town Of Bethlehem," "Joy To The World" and "Angels We Have Heard On High."

"Let It Snow" follows and then Freelon and Brown contribute their take on Vince Guaraldi's "Christmas Time Is Here" in a nod to a more recent childhood holiday classic. Memories of early Christmas mornings helped Freelon transform Duke Ellington's "I Love The Sunrise" into a beautiful tribute to the dawn of Christmas day. According to Freelon, an added level of excitement and anticipation has always been a part of the Christmas celebration and the next two tracks ("O Little Town of Bethlehem" and "Little Drummer Boy") reflect that sentiment.

Freelon's bluesy vocal styling and a big dose of Hammond organ on "Silent Night" breathe unexpected vitality into one of the greatest holiday songs of all time.

According to Freelon, "We want folks to come away feeling the real friendship that was present in the studio." Nowhere is that kinship more evident than on "Baby, It's Cold Outside." "John's debut as a vocalist creates a track where we have fun with each other as only old friends can," she said. The surprises continue on "I'll Be Home For Christmas," which turns the slow Bing Crosby standard into a joyful New Orleans style romp.

Freelon and Brown have concerts scheduled in Durham, Charlotte, Greensboro and Washington D.C. in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Nnenna Freelon's Christmas is set for release in early November and will be available via www.brownboulevard.com, iTunes, Amazon and traditional retail outlets.
