The holiday season is approaching fast and for Durham Parks and Recreation (DPR) that means it’s time to start planning the 2011 holiday event.

DPR is proud to host the 2nd Annual Holiday Fun Fest and Tree Lighting Ceremony. The event is free and open to the public. This festival will have something for the whole family.

The festivities will be held on Saturday, December 3, 2011 from 2 p.m. – 6 p.m. at the Durham Central Park, 502 Foster St., and will also include events at the historic Durham Armory, 212 Foster St. The Fun Fest begins at 2 p.m. and will conclude with the tree lighting ceremony at 5:30 p.m., which will be held at the CCB Plaza, 201 N. Corcoran St.

The event is designed to engage the community in a day of fun activities and events. Participants will not only be able to observe the activities, but take part in them as well.

Festival Activities at Durham Central Park:
Peppermint Plunge Snow Sledding (Sleds will be provided)
Petting Zoo
Merry Mini-parade (at 5 p.m. - see map for new extended route)
Community Care Corner (Write messages to soldiers in the U.S. military)
Holiday Eats & Treats (Food vendor lane)
Campfire Sing-along and S’mores
Tricycle Race (for adults and older kids)
Trackless Train Rides (for adults and kids)
Kiddie Construction Tent (Hosted by The Home Depot)
North Pole Activities at Durham Armory:
Holiday Art and Craft Vendors
Meet and Greet with Santa
Holiday Movies on the Jumbo Screen
2 p.m. – "Miracle on 34th Street"
4 p.m. – "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer"
