The USO\, in p artnership with Hire Heroes USA\, hosts transition workshops for wounded\, ill and injured service members\, their spouses\, and caregivers. The wor kshops focus on resume writing\, mock interviews\, professional work pract ices and translating prior military experience into a civilian career. As a follow up to the workshops the USO\, in partnership with Hire Heroes USA and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce\, host Career Opportunity Days for wound ed\, ill and injured troops\, spouses and caregivers. These non-traditiona l career fair type events match employers with participants in advance bas ed on interest and background. Employers are asked to provide position des criptions of available jobs along with geographic location of each to aid in better matching of candidates to employers. Employers conduct mock inte rviews and provide interviewing skills and feedback. Career Opportunity Da ys are limited to 10-15 employers and 50-75 wounded\, ill and injured tran sitioning troops and veterans\, as well as their spouses and caregivers to ensure the size and magnitude of these events provides an environment con ducive to one-on-one interaction and networking. In 2011\, six Career Oppo rtunity Days were held with nearly 300 attendees. This year\, the USO will host 22 workshops and 14 Career Opportunity Days.

\nNo more than 15 employers with active employment opportunities and up to 40-70 wounded \, ill\, or injured\, service members making the transition to a civilian career\, as well as their spouses\, and caregivers. To attend participants must have previously completed either a Hire Heroes USA transition worksh op or another employment preparation program. All attendees will be prepar ed with resumes.

\nCareer Opportunity Days are high-touch\, non-traditional career fairs. Emp loyers are provided resumes in advance for those that have pre-registered\ , and they are connected for one-on-one “mock” interviews with service members\, spouses and caregivers based on their backgrounds as well as th e geographic locations each service member plans to live after medical ret irement.
\nThis interaction also gives the employe r a unique opportunity to get to know the prospective candidates. We match attendees with employers based on their military specialty\, previous exp erience\, and geographic interest for relocation. Employers are given inte rviewees resumes in advance\, except for in cases when troops do not pre-r egister.

The theme for the event\, held at the Hilton in t he Walt Disney Resort\, is Transitions in Care – The Time is Now. This y ear’s event will mark the organization’s 10th Anniversary.

The Business Essentials for Technical Professionals course w
ill be delivered by NC State University Poole Collee's Executive Programs
in fall 2012. Delivery dates are Sept. 13\, 14 and Oct. 25\, 26\, 2012.
This four-day course is designed for engineers\, scientists\, and
others from applied technical fields who want to gain a deeper understand
ing of business.
“A key goal of the program is to enable part
icipants to become ‘Boundary-Spanners’ – technical leaders who have
the general management awareness to work effectively across functional are
as within their organization\,” said Dan McGurrin\, Poole College’s Ex
ecutive Programs director.
“Today’s successful organization
s need technical professionals who understand how their work intersects wi
th marketing\, finance\, operations\, strategy\, and services\,” McGurri
n said. “This course will help participants understand the different fun
ctions\, how they sometimes conflict with one another\, and how management
systems can streamline these activities.”
In keeping with Po
ole College’s focus on applied learning\, Business Essentials participan
ts also will work in small teams to complete a business planning project
either for a new product offering at their company or in support of a p

wed by the 5K. The Family Fun Run is open to all ages and abilities to r
