Addition and renovation for Asheboro High School

by April 18, 2018

In accordance with NCGS 143-135.8, Asheboro City Schools intends to prequalify interested contractors for the construction of an addition and renovation for Asheboro High School.  The proposed facility is to be a two (2) story, 37,670 square foot addition and miscellaneous renovations to the existing structure.  The project includes a mechanical penthouse and includes a classroom wing and a student commons/café space with an associated catering kitchen.  The work will include plumbing, mechanical, electrical, and fire protection systems.

The new addition will include masonry load bearing construction with a partial steel frame connection to the existing building. The foundation system will consist of shallow concrete footings under each column and continuous concrete footings along each exterior or load bearing wall. Interior non-load bearing walls will be placed on thickened slabs. The first-floor slab-on-grade will be a reinforced 4” concrete slab. The elevated floor slabs will be concrete on metal deck supported primarily by bar joists with intermittent steel beams. The roof system will be TPO membrane roofing, metal deck on bar joists, with steel beams supporting the penthouse.

The heating and cooling system will consist of a four-pipe system. The existing water-cooled chillers will be replaced and increased in size to accommodate the new addition as well as adding the main and auxiliary gyms to the system. The cooling towers will be replaced. Chilled water will be provided by the new larger water-cooled chillers placed in the original mechanical room. Hot water will be provided by the new high efficiency natural gas fired condensing boilers located in the original boiler room.

A complete fire protection system will be provided for the new addition and renovated areas. An associative fire pump will be provided with emergency backup power

The proposed facility will be located at 1221 South Park Street, Asheboro, NC.  The project will be bid as a single prime project.
