Grants to be Used to Increase Organ Donation and Advance Care Planning Education: The License to Give Trust Fund Commission has announced the completion of its 14th grant cycle and awarded grants-in-aid to three North Carolina non-profits: NC Medical Society Foundation of Raleigh, Total Christian Ministries of Greenville and Mount Airy High School Interact Club of Mount Airy. “These grants will be used to encourage more North Carolinians to register as organ donors through the NC Division of Motor Vehicles or online atDonateLifeNC.org, and to educate North Carolinians about Advance Care Planning,” said Chairman Dennis Meyers. “The ultimate goal of these organizations’ efforts is to save the lives of more North Carolinians who are waiting for an organ, eye or tissue transplant.

The NC Medical Society Foundation received a grant for $98,500. The grant will be used to conduct a statewide public education campaign called “Begin the Conversation” to transform public attitudes about end of life decisions. The campaign includes television and radio advertisements, print articles, community and professional workshops and conferences, social networking, billboards and a variety of marketing tools.

The Mount Airy High School Interact Club received a grant for $10,000. The grant will be used to educate students at Mount Airy High School, Surry Central High School and North Surry High School about organ, eye and tissue donations at a one-day event that will include testimonials from organ recipients and those who had family members who were organ donors.

Total Christian Ministries received an extension grant of $20,000 to continue their project entitled the “Eastern North Carolina Donor Impact Project.” This project focuses on Pitt and Edgecombe Counties with the goal of increasing awareness and knowledge about organ, eye and tissue donation to increase the number of people on the NC Donor Registry. The grant specifically targets the African-American, Latino and other minority populations which are the majority of people waiting for organ transplants in those counties.

The License to Give Trust Fund Commission was established in 2004 and is a division of the NC Department of Administration. For information on the Commission or other grant opportunities, please call 919-715-3837 or visit www.doa.nc.gov/ltgtfc
