New NHRMC Medical Tower Opens to General Medical Patients

by June 29, 2020

WILMINGTON, NC – New Hanover Regional Medical Center will begin caring for patients at its new medical tower on Monday, June 29, 2020. Positioned on NHRMC’s 17th Street campus in Wilmington, the new 108-bed tower will begin by opening all 36 beds of the 5th floor to general medical patients. Additional floors and patient beds will be opened on a phased approach based on care needs.

Construction of the $87 million medical tower began in 2017. Originally envisioned as an orthopedic tower, plans shifted to a heart and vascular center in the fall of 2020. To best serve our community in today’s environment, NHRMC leadership changed the plans to a general medical floor. This switch allows flexibility in patient care operations as a more definitive direction is determined for long-term use.

“This is an exciting and proud time for our organization to be able to make this space available for our patients and community,” said Andre Boyd, NHRMC Chief Operating Officer. “Having the new tower open allows us to reposition our current care spaces throughout our campus to better accommodate patient needs.”
