Exporting isn't just for the big guys anymore. In fact, an increasing number of small to mid sized businesses in North Carolina are finding success in the international marketplace, with the NC State Ports providing the point of access. By attending seminars provided by the NC Department of Commerce, many North Carolina business people are learning how to utilize the State Ports to expand business exports and marketing strategies to foreign markets. "The world is moving to a global economy, and if you're going to be in business, you should be a part of it," says Herschel Sanders, president and owner of Menu Graphic Systems in Concord. Mr. Sanders has enjoyed large growth since expanding into the Mexican market in 1994, and expects even greater growth in the future. Mike Mastromichalis, the Export Outreach coordinator at the Small Business Center at Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte says, "There are many reasons to export, such as better overall profitability margins and use of existing personnel and capital.
Also, exports can receive a substantial tax deduction and ...new markets give companies a broader marketing base, reducing vulnerability to foreign and domestic markets." Mid-sized companies have already discovered the benefits of exporting. About 80% of firms with 100+ employees are involved in international trade, and advances in international banking, transportation, and communications are expanding the market opportunities to the smallest of companies.
