Jessica Holmes For Labor Commissioner – Public Service Is Key

by 05/27/2020

Call her the brightest, freshest new star of North Carolina’s Democratic Party. But if you know Jessica Holmes, Wake County Commissioner, and current candidate for state Labor Commissioner, you’d also be forced to also call her one of the hardest working public servants for the people, anywhere.

“I believe that politics is not about a title, or a position, but service,” she says.
It is not unusual to see Holmes volunteering to bring food to poor families or working with Habitat for Humanity to build homes for the needy, even while she’s supposed to be out campaigning for office.

And Holmes has a special place in her heart for helping disadvantaged children, serving on several boards for early childhood development and improved educational opportunities.

“I came here to serve with a focus on people who are often unseen because I know what it is like to be in that category,” says Holmes, the youngest person ever to be elected to the Wake County Commission Board, and the youngest ever to serve as chairman of that body.

Professionally, the UNC – Chapel Hill/UNC School of Law distinguished alumna is a labor and employment law attorney who advocates for workers’ rights and safe working conditions.

Holmes is a proud and devoted member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc, and is supportive of its commitment to servant-leadership to the African-American community, it’s institutions and businesses.

And Holmes is fully supportive of the need for all Greek organizations to motivate black students on all college campuses to civically engage, register to vote, and take part in the November elections.

“The Divine Nine have a legacy of nonpartisan voter engagement,” Holmes told GDN. “It’s often said that each upcoming election is the most important. I truly believe that the election on November 3rd., 2020 will be historic and will impact the lives of generations to come.”

Holmes concluded, “Accordingly, it’s critical for us to be proactive about GOTV efforts, particularly with our students on college campuses across North Carolina.”

Jessica Holmes will serve as a delegate to nominate Joe Biden at the 2020 Democratic National Convention in July.
