Engineering Technician

The Orange Water and Sewer Authority (OWASA), is Carrboro-Chapel Hill’s not-for-profit public service agency delivering high-quality water, wastewater, and reclaimed water services.  We are seeking a highly self-motivated, detail oriented, technical savvy Engineering Technician to join our successful team.   The ideal candidate is a team player with an excellent work ethic and the desire to work in a collaborative environment.  Desired traits include strong service-oriented attitude, professional demeanor, strong communication skills, and attention to detail.

Position aids and performs general technical functions within the Engineering and Planning Department.  Performs various computer aided design/drafting, Geographic Information System (GIS) work and Global Positioning System (GPS) field locates to maintain accurate records of water, sewer and reclaimed water facilities and infrastructure.  Performs various reviews of deeds of easement and proposed water and sewer design drawings. Meets regularly with homeowners and customers to provide information on OWASA’s water, sewer, and reclaimed water systems and to provide advice and counsel as necessary to resolve problems.  Prepares construction and traffic control plans as needed for internal departments. Other civil engineering related duties to include extensive interaction with developers, customers, and engineering firms.

Position requires a valid North Carolina driver’s license. Candidates should have one to three years of relevant experience with an associate degree in Civil Engineering Technology or a related field of study.  Previous experience with GPS/GIS processes; use of surveying equipment; AutoCAD; Microsoft Office; ARC GIS; and an ability to read deeds of easements, plats, and electronic maps are strongly desired. Position requires strong skills with positive customer interactions.  Position requires office and field work that includes walking over uneven surfaces, frequently lifting 10-25 pounds and occasionally opening manhole lids.

Salary range $51,005 – $78,535.
