Join Us for a Virtual Town Hall: Organizing Socially Responsible Protests – May 27 at 8pm

by 05/27/2020

As the global pandemic has necessitated measures to protect public health, activists and organizers are working in these unique conditions to mobilize and protest in a safe and socially responsible manner. Those who seek to organize socially responsible protests have to contend with government and law enforcement officials’ patchwork policies and practices that at times go beyond and outside public health protections, including implementing content-based restrictions on assembly, targeting progressive political activists with fines, and employment of racist police tactics. We have been working to help people maintain effective protests, discussing free speech activities that are lawful and socially responsible and responding to outrageous police actions.

Tune in and JOIN US at Facebook.com/PCJFund on Wednesday, May 27 LIVE at 8 PM (ET)  and 5 PM (PT) as we discuss the legal terrain for activists to provide an understanding of our rights to engage in socially responsible protest during the pandemic, ways to evaluate and work to overcome potential obstacles, and case studies of recent successful protests. The town hall will have legal overviews and First Amendment information from lawyers, and case studies and tactical advice from organizers of recent successful protests. Bring your questions for Q & A.

The event features:

Mara Verheyden-Hilliard, constitutional rights lawyer and co-founder of the Partnership for Civil Justice Fund;

Nick Robinson, Legal Advisor for the International Center for Not-for-Profit Law (ICNL);

Chinyere Tutashinda, Co-Director of BlackOUT Collective

Tyler Crawford, Mass Defense Coordinator at the National Lawyers Guild;
