November 27 the Moral Fight for Our Democracy and Our Power Continues

by 11/09/2018

We are grateful to all of you who overcame barriers placed in your path— personal and structural— to express your voice in this historic election! Democracy is a practice. It is only realized through the expression of the people’s will.

But, the fight is not over! All roads lead to Raleigh ‪on November 27 as we prepare for this usurper General Assembly, which came to power illegally through racially discriminatory maps, to return to Raleigh in a lame duck special session to make a final effort to enshrine discrimination in our laws.

In this election, misleading, dishonest constitutional amendments were forced upon voters of North Carolina— with limited time and without full and meaningful information. As we have argued in court, these amendments under the NC Constitution’s doctrine of “usurper government” were unauthorized by law to be on the ballot. As a product of a sweeping, unconstitutional racial gerrymander, this unlawfully constituted General Assembly has no legal authority to take the extreme step of proposing constitutional amendments. Two of those Amendments that the NC NAACP vehemently opposed were defeated yesterday and the defeat of those unlawful power grabs is cause for celebration.

And yet—alongside three other amendments, the misleading and discriminatory amendment supporting a Photo Voter ID requirement was not defeated at the ballot box yesterday. The NC NAACP has lead the fight against the anti-democracy, racist photo voter ID before it was improperly placed on the ballot and we will continue to fight it and any effort to suppress the sacred right to vote in the weeks, months, and years to come. Just last week, we announced that we have filed a new Motion for Summary Judgment with the Court requesting that the amendments— improperly and illegally placed on the ballot— be declared void.

Please pledge to stand with us in this fight!

Forward Together! Not One Step Back!
