Moral March to the Polls Organize, Register and Vote!
by Kathy Grear 09/19/2014Educate, organize and mobilize — We’re now in the final stage of our campaign to defeat voter suppression. Therefore, as we count-down to November 4, 2014, I am providing actionable information and deadlines for our readers. This week our title and mantra have been lifted directly from the Moral Monday Movement because it appears to be the most dynamic and focused initiative that has the potential for success in November.
At the Moral March to the Polls rally held in Wilmington on Monday, September 15th, Rev. William Barber made the point that the upcoming election is about economics and voting. His point was that the extremist policies enacted by the Thom Tillis led North Carolina House of Representative, were designed to provide tax cuts for the rich and program cuts for the poor and middle class. The voter suppression legislation that he helped to enact is designed to prevent the poor and middle class voters from being able to overturn the extremist, economic inspired legislation.
My recommendation going forward is for those that want to defeat the extremist in November to join an organized effort to do so. The non-partisan leadership organizations that are aggressively fighting voter suppression that I recommend are The NAACP, The League of Women Voters and North Carolina Democracy. For those desiring a more partisan participation, the North Carolina Democratic Party and its affiliates, the county organizations and the African-American Caucus of the North Carolina Democratic Party are good options. Lastly, it is extremely important that our Black Elected Officials, ministers and other community leaders volunteer and urge their congregations and constituents to volunteer and become the margin of victory in November.
