“Tell Us to ‘Shut up and Dribble’…It’s Disrespectful” – Ray Allen Has a Message for the Fans Telling NBA Players to Avoid Talking About Politics
Fans admire NBA players for their exceptional skills, which distinguish them from ordinary individuals. People from all walks of life spend their hard-earned money to watch these talented athletes perform. While all of that is true, NBA legend Ray Allen argued that professional athletes are not only good for the public’s entertainment.
Allen pointed out that, apart from being famous for their job, NBA players are also residents, taxpayers, and members of the community. Therefore, they should not be prevented from expressing their thoughts on various political and social issues. If anything, they are also entitled to it.
For Ray-Ray, stopping sports figures and personalities from speaking their minds about what they have the right to discuss has become a common trend in society in recent years. He firmly believes that it’s about time people start to realize that they are already disrespecting one of their own even by believing this narrative.
“Here’s probably the most disappointing thought that I have, and have had for the longest time,” Allen told Esquire in 2018. “In light of all the social issues that we deal with now, and in the world today—we, as athletes, pay a lot of money in taxes. Most of us have kids. We have homes. We have families. So, every issue that is in play affects us.”
“Too often, we have fans—whether they’re cheering for us or against us—that tell us to ‘shut up and dribble,’ or stop being political, or stay out of politics. Just stick to basketball. It’s disrespectful to all of us, because we do have positions,” Allen further exclaimed. “We do have perspectives.”
Pro athletes know more than just ball
Throughout his illustrious 18-year NBA career, Allen has collected a wide array of accolades. He is a two-time NBA champion, a 10-time All-Star, and a Hall of Famer. Like any other legendary athlete, Allen also takes immense pride in his accomplishments as a player.
However, the 6’5″ former shooting guard stressed that he also knows about the things happening around him. This thought led Allen to point out another ongoing issue in society. Ray-Ray noticed that nowadays, people quickly underestimate others, including famous athletes. He noted that most NBA players are being stereotyped and perceived as selfish individuals who are not capable of grasping societal issues.
Ultimately, Allen concluded that this is just one of the many alarming things the country must address sooner rather than later.
“Most of us are way more educated than people give us credit for,” Allen pointed out about professional athletes. “Because we do pay attention to what’s going on around us. We have to stay awake and keep our eyes open and pay attention to what’s going on. And then, when we see something that’s unjust, we have to speak up on it. There’s a lot of things that are going wrong in America today.”
The fight has to continue
As a member of the community, Allen believes that his voice matters. He is convinced that it is his responsibility to continue what his predecessors in the NBA fought for. Allen also expressed profound gratitude for the contributions made by iconic Black athletes in the battle against social injustice. He acknowledges that their efforts paved the way for athletes to gain recognition and the ability to support their families.
For Allen, the most meaningful tribute to these influential figures in society is to carry on the work they have started. By doing so, Ray-Ray believes that he is honoring their legacy and advocating for change and justice in society.
“We have it easy as black athletes now in America,” Allen firmly stated. “We have it easy compared to what Bill Russell, Muhammad Ali, Jim Brown, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt Chamberlain—what those guys had to deal with back in the ’50s and ’60s. We have it easy. But they fought all the social injustices, just so they could exist and form their sport. So that we can now have the platform that we have.”
“So, we have to continue to fight those injustices and those societal ills that people put on us,” he continued. “Because we’re going to have to continue doing it for the next generation.”
Allen raised quite a few controversial yet powerful insights about our society. He was on point in implying that by acknowledging the pressing challenges that society currently faces, one is enriching his perspective and inspiring those around him to reflect and engage.
Truthfully, an individual may not possess the power to change the world, but by simply becoming aware of these issues, he is already making a significant contribution to his community.
