NC HBCUs to Lead a March to the Polls to Kick Off Early Voting
GREENSBORO, NC— The Tom Joyner Foundation, Roland Martin, Radio One, the NC HBCU Alumni Leadership Roundtable and the over 95 Adult and 25 Youth and College Division Units of the NC NAACP have partnered to hold early voting March to the Polls to ensure that every HBCU student votes during Early Voting.
On Frida, October 21st, 2016 at 3pm, students at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and Bennett College will lead a March to the Polls to kick-off the first week of Early Voting and celebrate the NAACP’s voting rights victory in the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals. The Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II will attend the rally and press conference at North Carolina A&T State University. In 2012, NCAT had an Early Voting polling site on campus for all 17 days of Early Voting. This year, in spite of the historic Richmond Decision, the Republican-led Board of Elections has reduced the number of days this important site will be open to only 9 days. Rev. Dr. Barber, President of the North Carolina NAAACP, will address the Republican-led Board of Elections across the state, which continues to brazenly ignore the Court’s order.
The March to the Polls will be part of the statewide “It’s Our Time, It’s Our Vote” campaign to register, educate, mobilize and protect the vote in North Carolina. The NC A&T and Bennett March is one of more than 50 marches across the state organized during Early Voting.
The March celebrates the historic voting rights victory in the case of “NC NAACP vs. McCrory”. Gov. McCrory and the extremists in power at the State Legislature passed “the worst voter suppression law” in the nation, “surgically targeting” Black and other voter of color, students and people in college, by cutting and eliminating many provisions that had made North Carolina’s voting system one of the best in the nation. The Richmond Federal Appeals Court found these voter suppression tricks to be unconstitutional, and banned their use in a decision filed on July 29, 2016. The McCrory-appointed State Board of Elections, which has a 3-2 Republican majority, and local Board of Elections, which have a 2-1 Republican majority, have ignored the Court’s injunction, and in many counties have tried to limit access to polling places during Early Voting.
Because of the court victory in NC NAACP v. McCrory, you do NOT need an ID to vote.
Early Voting is from October 20th until November 5th (except for the NCAT site).
You can register (you will need some form of ID that shows your address on it to register) and then you can vote on the same visit during Early Voting.
