Local Kindergarten Teacher Partners with  Cape Fear Habitat for Women Build 2025

WILMINGTON, NC — This May, more than 300 individuals, teams and community partners will come together to raise funds for and construct a Habitat home to be purchased by Raquel, a single mother of two and local kindergarten teacher. Raquel’s home will be in Haven Place, Cape Fear Habitat’s newest development located in Castle Hayne.

“Participants have the chance to get directly involved in making a difference in the life of a family right here in our community,” said Christina Ferris, Cape Fear Habitat Development Director. “The great part is that many will have the chance to meet and work alongside Raquel, the homeowner. It’s an empowering and uplifting experience for everyone who joins in, whether you volunteer, donate or both.”

How to Get Involved

Donate – Individuals and teams of women (and men) raise funds that will go directly to construction costs for Raquel’s home. An easy-to-use online giving platform is available at https://justgiving.com/campaign/capefearhabitatwomenbuild2025 for anyone who wants to set up a donation page and encourage their friends and family to support. Sponsorships that provide valuable social media and marketing recognition are also available for companies or groups by calling 910-762-4744 ext. 124.

The fundraising goal this year is $50,000.

Volunteer Anyone can volunteer to work on site to help build the home–no experience is necessary! Habitat staff and regular volunteers are on site to guide and teach so anyone can participate in the construction process, from building and raising the walls, to roofing, siding, painting and baseboards, and landscaping.

Dates The following dates are available for teams and individuals to participate from 7:45 am to 2:00 pm each day.

  • May 3rd – Wall building at the Cape Fear Habitat Warehouse, 3310 Fredrickson Rd in Wilmington
  • The remaining Women Build Volunteer Days take place on site in Haven Place. Because this is a

new development, GPS coordinates are not yet available. The Haven Place sign and entrance is just

past this address: 3121 Castle Hayne Road, Castle Hayne.

History – This initiative, started 34 years ago by Habitat for Humanity International, empowers female-led families to purchase affordable housing by bringing together local businesses, volunteers, and supporters to raise funds and work alongside the homeowner to build her home. Women Build participants work individually and as teams to raise funds by encouraging friends, family, and co-workers to contribute to their personal and collective fundraising efforts.

Founded in 1987 as an independent affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, Cape Fear Habitat has served more than 400 hard-working families in Pender, Duplin and New Hanover Counties. With staff and the involvement of thousands of volunteers, Cape Fear Habitat builds 16 homes each year and provides a Critical Home Repair Program that helps preserve the value of owner-occupied homes. The affiliate also manages ReStore locations in Wilmington that sell new and gently used household goods, furniture and remodeling supplies that help offset administrative costs for the organization. A new Deconstruction Program provides skilled teams to remove cabinets, countertops and appliances prior to a remodel or demolition. These items are then sold in ReStores at affordable prices.
