North Carolinians Rally to Call for Accountability Over House Rules Change

by 01/30/2023

State Republican leaders are attempting an unprecedented move to roll-back crucial rights.

Raleigh, North Carolina – On Tuesday, January 31st, a coalition of civil rights organizations and issue experts will gather to demand accountability over House Speaker Tim Moore’s proposed House rules change in order to ensure all North Carolinians’ personal freedoms and individual rights are protected.

Fair representation is crucial to ensure we have a voice in the decisions our legislature makes, and North Carolinians deserve to have their elected leaders participate in the job they were sent to Raleigh to do. The House rules for previous sessions required advance notice for override votes to ensure all representatives are on the floor for crucial decisions. However, Speaker Tim Moore wants to eliminate this window so that he can override Governor Cooper’s vetoes without any notice.

This power grab attempt affects us all because the state legislature creates laws that impact our everyday lives, such as public education, fair elections, abortion rights, and civil liberties. Therefore, North Carolinians are calling on Speaker Moore to keep the process of governing fair and transparent – allowing the people’s voices to be heard through their elected representatives – as our Constitution intended.
