Young Black Males’ Writing Workshop at UIC Spawns National Curricula

A summer writing institute for adolescent black males based at the University of Illinois at Chicago is advancing literacy around the country through two curricula based on it.  Scholastic, Inc. recently launched “On the Record,” a middle-school school curriculum by Alfred Tatum, director of the UIC Reading Clinic. Last year, Scholastic published Tatum’s “ID,” a writing curriculum for high school.

Ai-Jen Poo, a powerful and passionate advocate for the rights of domestic workers, leads the National Domestic Workers Alliance.  Who are these folks?  They are the private household workers (maids) who propped up inept women in the movie, The Help. They are the home health aides who take care of our elders when they are ill or disabled, bringing them meals, bathing them, and accompanying them to medical appointments.  They are the nannies that care for children when parents are working.  In some ways, they are a backbone of our economy, and yet they often have neither voice nor money.

By many counts, the lives of African-Americans in the United States have progressed since the Civil Rights era. National surveys show narrowing over the past few decades of gaps between blacks and whites in education and employment. There’s a growing black middle class and a black president. The surveys also suggest a smaller racial gap in voting, and many credit a large turnout of black voters for President Barack Obama’s 2008 election.

College Courses Featuring Porn Become More Common

At New York University, assignments for Anthropology of the Unconscious include discussing X-rated Japanese comic books. At Bates College, in Lewiston, Maine, students can take a class called, “Doing it, Getting it, Seeing it, Reading it,” which among other sexual topics, discusses the difference between “pornography and erotica.” And in a course offered at Wesleyan University, a secular liberal arts school in Connecticut, undergraduates taking “Pornography: Writings of Prostitutes,” are actually required to produce a work of pornography for their final project.
