Omega Psi Phi $35,000 Contribution To Fayetteville State University Campaign

Fayetteville, NC — Fayetteville State University (FSU) announced recently a $35,000 gift from the Tau Gamma Gamma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. The chapter presented a check to FSU Chancellor James A. Anderson during halftime of the FSU versus Shaw University football game on October 12, 2013.

The donation is in conjunction with university’s $25 million Campaign for FSU and will be used for scholarships for members of the Delta Gamma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi on the FSU campus.

“Over the past year the chapter pondered how to best grow a scholarship effort in support of young men attending college,” said J.E. “Chris” Chrishon, reporter for the Tau Gamma Gamma Chapter. “As you know, the current fiscal environment creates a challenge for students striving to complete their college dream – receiving a degree. Tau Gamma Gamma realizes the struggle and desires to ease the way to get ahead by creating an endowment that will provide funds to a member of the fraternity as he pursues his education at Fayetteville State University.”

FSU Chancellor James A. Anderson said the donation from Omega Psi Phi is needed and comes at a time when the cost of a college education continues to rise and financial aid and other resources for students are waning.

“I want to thank Omega Psi Phi for making this investment in the students of Fayetteville State University,” Anderson said. “This support clearly demonstrates their commitment to the organization’s principals of scholarship and service, and it shows they realize the importance of a college education and the positive impact it can have on the life of a student.”

Founded in 1867, FSU is the second-oldest public institution in North Carolina. It offers nearly 60 degrees in the arts, sciences, business, and education at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels. It serves a student body of nearly 6,000 students and has a faculty and staff of approximately 900.

Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. is the first international fraternal organization to be founded on the campus of a historically black college. It was founded on November 17, 1911, at Howard University in Washington, D.C. The founders were three Howard University undergraduates, Edgar Amos Love, Oscar James Cooper and Frank Coleman. Joining them was their faculty adviser, Dr. Ernest Everett Just. The Tau Gamma Gamma Chapter, based at Fort Bragg, N.C., was chartered December 6, 1987. •
