True story shows how adolescent overcame obstacles, overwhelming odds to live successful life

In “The Dead Soldiers” (ISBN 146375244X), DMR1 allows readers to experience his journey from a DC area street hustler to an undergrad on an upper Midwestern college campus. He says that his situation is only one of many during his time and is still happening today with individuals of all ages and backgrounds.

DMR1 takes readers on a journey through his time in college in the 1970s after federal legislation ended segregation on American college campuses. With the advent of new federal loan and grant programs, many colleges began to open their doors, some doing so simply for profit.

Changes in the law did not change attitudes, and, as a result, many minority students faced daily struggles on campuses that weren’t too keen on inclusion of African Americans in the first place. Many of the tragedies and injustices that occurred haven’t been spoken of, and DMR1 wants to spread knowledge about them as well as his own experiences.

DMR1 hopes his book will inspire readers who may find themselves dismayed or discouraged to do something as simple as attend college because of their ethnicity or background.

“I want to encourage, educate and inspire those today who may have begun life penniless, on the lower rungs of society, but nonetheless seek and strive for a better day and a brighter life,” DMR1 says.
