Women and People of Color Being Recruited for Master of Public Administration Degree Program

National Urban Fellows, Country’s Top Leadership Development Organization Seeks Leaders for a Changing America
NEW YORK — As National Urban Fellows (NUF) makes plans to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of its first graduating class, it will launch a series of national recruitment campaigns for the 2011 fellowship class. The organization will host recruitment receptions in three major cities seeking applicants interested in the fully paid fellowship program that is designed to develop the leadership for a changing America.

National Urban Fellows, a 501(c) 3 not-for-profit institution, addresses one the most important and challenging issues faced by America today — the under-representation of people of color and women in leadership — particularly in the public and non-profit sectors. Founded in 1969 and recognized as one of the oldest and finest leadership development organizations in the U.S., particularly for women and people of color, NUF has developed leaders who identify issues, shape solutions and form policy. Today, well over 1,100 Alumni make a personal and professional impact in government and nonprofit organizations across the United States.

For nearly 40 years, the program has successfully provided local leaders of color with the education and experience needed to manage city governments. This ground-breaking approach was developed during a time of unending turbulence in cities across the nation. The country’s urban centers were in crisis as each city struggled to cope with pervasive violence and social unrest, the outcomes of years of social injustice.

Communities throughout the United States were experiencing the results of discrimination, segregation, poverty, unemployment, poor housing, and police brutality. NUF has afforded individuals who had been traditionally under-represented in the government sector the opportunity, visibility and recognition necessary to manage programs intended to improve conditions in their communities, while empowering leadership representative of their communities.

In addition to the recruitment receptions to be held in Atlanta, GA; Indianapolis, IN; and Los Angeles, CA, the organization will also host its 40th Annual Leadership Conference in Washington, DC, January 17 – 23, 2010. The conference theme, 40 Years: Past, Present and Future Leadership will celebrate the uncompromising leaders of color and women, whose history of commitment to diversity, social justice and equity date back to the founding of National Urban Fellows, through to the present day and beyond.

NUF seeks individuals who have U.S. Citizenship; a Bachelor’s degree; a minimum of five to seven years managerial experience; and the ability to meet the admission requirements of Baruch College. Relevant attributes of successful fellows include self-discipline, interpersonal and problem-solving skills, high standards of integrity and work ethics, and a strong desire and commitment to addressing urban problems. GRE scores are not required for the NUF program.

The top graduate degree fellowship program offers an intensive 14-month graduate program through Bernard M. Baruch College, School of Public Affairs in New York. The fellowship is comprised of two semesters of academic course work and a nine-month mentorship with senior-level administrators in a partnering government agency or not-for-profit organization. It is the only program in the country where Fellows receive an advanced degree and critical leadership experience. Fellows completing the program receive a Master of Public Administration.
