Fair Courts in North Carolina – Together We Are Winning the Fight

Fair Courts in North Carolina – Together We Are Winning the Fight

by Gerrick Brenner - Executive Director, Progress NC Action January 18, 2018

Last week, the General Assembly came back to Raleigh with schemes to dismantle our independent courts. And in the face of hundreds of protesters from across the state, the politicians backed down, left town, and did nothing.

Together we are winning this fight for Fair Courts in North Carolina.

And while it’s snowing in most of our state, now is the time to turn up the heat – on our lawmakers! Last fall, the politicians took away one of our rights to vote for judges. Now it’s time to take it back.

Last October lawmakers in Raleigh CANCELLED the primary election of judges in 2018. This means that your 2018 ballot will be chaotic and will be nearly impossible for voters to make informed decisions when voting for judges.  The cancellation of this election is just one step in the Republican plan to rig our courts in their favor.

Our Fair Courts Coalition has traveled the state for the last two months holding town hall meetings, press conferences, and courthouse protests. We descended on Raleigh last week to demand that lawmakers keep their partisan political hands off of our independent courts.
Result? Lawmakers held hearings but the politicians passed NOTHING.  Not yet.
We have momentum and now is the time to demand our lawmakers walk back their attack on the court by demanding that they restore the primary election of judges in 2018.  We are winning this fight but we aren’t done.
DEMAND YOUR LAWMAKER RESTORE THE JUDICIAL PRIMARY IN 2018
It’s time our lawmakers listen to the will of their constituents. We are making a difference in the fight for fair courts together. We can win this.
Sincerely,
Gerrick Brenner
