It’s A Family Affair: Part 2 A Call to Action
by Peter Grear, GDN Copublisher 01/19/2023In September, Greater Diversity News (GDN), the home of The New Black Student Movement (The NBSM), announced its effort to promote family memberships in the NAACP. We believe that the NAACP represents a cause greater than any individual—community, or family, so we titled the initiative, It’s A Family Affair! In this effort, we encouraged African-American parents to purchase NAACP memberships for their children up to age 25 and for themselves if they were not already members. (Please visit www.naacp.org for membership information and to become more informed about its many vital projects.)
We at GDN have since extended our efforts with It’s a Family Affair! to focus on family genealogy and oral history. We were on the right track and making progress which logically recognized that African American families extend back to Africa and include those in the diaspora. GDN has joined the African Diaspora Development Institute (ADDI), an effort to unite Africans and Africans in the diaspora, and is currently promoting its free membership.
Former US Ambassador Arikana Chihombori-Quao, MD, is the president, founder, and CEO of ADDI. She is the most important leader of African descent since Dr. Martin Luther King, excluding former President Obama. (Please visit ouraddi.org to register for membership and view some of her many videos to become familiar with her accomplishments and call to Africans in the diaspora to come home to Africa, the Motherland.)
The response to GDN’s initiative has been positive, but not nearly enough. GDN is reaching out to Student Government Associations (SGAs), Black Student Unions (BSUs), and their supporters. We are asking all students, their families, and all people of African descent to support the NAACP, its Youth & College Division, ADDI, and GDN. Students must be included in our efforts to unite globally to continue the work of the Civil Rights Movement and to support the current needs of Africans in the diaspora. It is essential to recognize their ability to meet in cyberspace and their freedom from the encumbrances of individuals that would, from a lack of understanding, hinder the next generation of leaders of this present-day movement.
To support our ability to cover student activities and the activities of ADDI effectively, GDN maintains our website (www.greaterdiversity.com) and publishes three electronic newsletters weekly. We also carry a student-focused “think tank” (www.nbsm.greaterdiversity.com) and are expanding our YouTube channel to disseminate student and Pan-African-related podcasts. Please support GDN’s efforts by signing up for our free eNews editions and making a financial donation if possible.
